Geochemical Characterization and Trace-Element Mobility Assessment for Metallic Mine Reclamation in Soils Affected by Mine Activities in the Iberian Pyrite Belt

چکیده

The geochemical characterization of the mine deposits and soils in metal mining areas is essential order to develop an effective reclamation strategy. determination total potentially toxic element (PTE) content, together with application chemical extraction procedures, can give insight into behavior contaminants after different solutions, as well identify where urgent action needed. This work presents a practical evaluation pollution potential trace elements affected by activities, be used metallic reclamation. PTE was assessed single extractions simulate four environmental conditions: mobility under rainfall conditions, acid drainage, reducing plant uptake. spatial distribution study area evaluated content soil samples. Trace high natural mobility, such Zn, appeared concentrated at water sediment discharge areas, while As, Pb, Cu contents were higher near wastes. results obtained suggested that highest extracted complexing–reducing medium, due dissolution secondary sulfates Fe3+ oxyhydroxides subsequent release PTEs associated those mineral phases. Reclamation strategies applied should promote efficient infiltration, subsuperficial circulation maintain oxidant conditions soil. methodology this may constitute valuable tool define constraints help appropriate solutions.

Remediation measures and displacement of pollutants in soils affected by the spill of a pyrite mine.

The soils affected by the spill of a pyrite mine were analysed in 100 sampling points at three depths (0-10, 10-30, and 30-50 cm) in 1998 (after the tailings were removed), 1999 (after the cleaning of the highly contaminated areas), and 2004 (after the tilling of the upper 20-25 cm). The comparative study reveals that the removal of the tailings left a heterogeneous distribution pattern of the ...

Pollution of a River Basin Impacted by Acid Mine Drainage in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (sw Spain)

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) is one of the most famous sulfide mining regions in the world. Mining activity in the IPB dates back to prehistoric times, and though today there is no active mining, the pollution continues to generate. The result is acidic drainage containing elevated concentration of sulfate and heavy metals. This is responsible for the pollution and degradation of the Odiel Riv...

Geochemical Assessment of the Impact of Mine Tailings Reclamation on the Quality of Soils at AngloGold Concession, Obuasi, Ghana

This study assessed the geochemical impact of mine tailings reclamation on the quality of soils from the AngloGold Concession, Obuasi, Ghana. Soil samples from mine tailings reclamation sites were evaluated for the concentrations of plant nutrients and trace metals. Contaminations of trace metals, using geochemical pollution indices were used to assess possible effects on agriculture and liveli...
